Collectible Sports Memorabilia

Collecting sports collectibles or sports memorabilia, antique or modern, is limited by two factors: the money available and the space to be filled. Having determined these basic essentials, it is then a personal matter. The taste of the collector may lead to Baseball Memorabilia, Basketball Memorabilia, Football Memorabilia, Golf Memorabilia, NASCAR memorabilia, Diecast Collectibles, Bobble Heads, Hero Posters, or innumerable other things. The lucky acquisition of an admired piece may lead to a determination to get more of the same, or at least to find out what the admiration is all about.

An encyclopedia definition of Sports Collecting would go something like this: “The hobby of sports collecting consists of acquiring specific sports items based on a particular sporting interest of the sports collector. These sports collections of sporting things are often highly organized, carefully cataloged, and attractively displayed.” A sports collectible (or collectable) is defined as a manufactured item designed for people interested in sports to collect. The term sports memorabilia usually refers to items related to sporting that can be directly connected to a recent or historical sporting event or sports personality. There are many people that collect these sports memorabilia and collectibles.

Since collecting depends on the interests of the individual collector, it may deal with almost any subject including sports collectible & sports memorabilia. The depth and breadth of the collection may also vary. Some collectors choose to focus on a specific subtopic within their area of general interest, for example Baseball memorabilia of the New York Yankees, Basketball memorabilia of the Los Angeles Lakers, Football memorabilia of the Dallas Cowboys, Golf memorabilia of Tiger Woods, NASCAR memorabilia of Tony Stewart, Diecast collectibles of fire trucks, Bobble Heads for any sport, & posters of heroes such as Lance Armstrong. Others prefer to keep a more general collection, accumulating any or all Baseball memorabilia, Basketball memorabilia, Football memorabilia, Golf memorabilia, NASCAR memorabilia, Diecast collectibles, Bobble Heads, or Hero Posters.

When the NBA, MLB, and NFL began selling their basketball, baseball, and football jerseys in stores during the 1980s, game used jerseys also became a hot item among sports memorabilia collectors. Former NBA player Dennis Rodman was famous for taking off his jerseys and throwing them to the stands after his games were over. Michael Jordan is probably the basketball player whose memorabilia is most sought after by collectors. Today’s stars include Ben Roethlisberger, Shaquille O’Neil, Nomar Garciaparra, etc. These players seem to be pushing the already popular area of sports collectibles and memorabilia to a new level of acceptance to the public.

Collections can take the form of a single item such as a signed baseball, football, or basketball. Collections can also take the form of a series of items, such as jerseys from each member of a particular baseball, basketball, or football team. A NASCAR collection of hats from different drivers is very popular. Golf balls with different logos are especially popular. The cost of any sports collectible memorabilia item is directly proportional to the popularity of the sports figure with which the item correlates. The more popular the sports figure, the more money the sports collectible memorabilia item will demand. The whole sports collectible memorabilia industry is driven by supply and demand. The more demand the higher the price and vice versa. Also, the more supply of an item, the lower the price. Sports cards would be a good example. Only so many of certain cards were ever made. Those carry a higher price than those that were made in bulk. Quality is a very big determining factor in the price of any sports collectible memorabilia item. In general, the better the quality, the higher the price.

2010 Pro Football Predictions: The Bears

Cutler’s first season in Chicago did not go as he had planned. While he threw a career-high 27 touchdown strikes, he also led the NFL with 26 interceptions. With Jay Cutler not playing up to his Pro Bowl status, the Chicago Bears managed only seven wins.

Following last year, it was evident that the Bears needed more upgrades. So they brought in defensive end Julius Peppers and running back Chester Taylor. They also added Mike Martz and Mike Tice to the coaching staff.

With these additions, Chicago is optimistic that they can contend for an NFC North title. That is, as long as Cutler has a come back back year.

Offense: While Cutler took a ton of heat for the Bears’ offensive woes, he wasn’t solely to blame. His job wasn’t easy playing behind a disappointing offensive line, and he received no help from the running game.

If Tice can get more out of the offensive line, Chicago should be able to do better than the 93.2 yards per game it gained on the ground last season, especially now that Taylor has been brought in to aid Matt Forte.

Matt was not able to keep building on the 1,238 yards he gained in his first season. Forte most likely won’t run for that many yards this season either, but the Bears’ running game is looking a little better after adding another versatile RB.

Jay Cutler did not start to jell with the receiving unit until late last season. Once he did, Chicago started to play much better football. While Chicago doesn’t have a true No. 1 wideout, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox and Devin Aromashodu are all capable of big games. Martz should also be able to look more ways to get tight end Greg Olsen involved.

If the running game is better, Jay Cutler will be better. He forced way too many passes last year because the offense was struggling to move the football.

Defense: Chicago’s pass rush has been inconsistent the last few seasons, but Peppers should instantly shake things up. We’re speaking about a freakish athlete who has recorded 10.5 or more sacks in five of the last six seasons. His presence on the line should also revitalize past Pro Bowler Tommy Harris.

Lance Briggs may now be Chicago’s best linebacker, but Brian Urlacher is still the leader of this defense. Chicago missed his leadership and big play ability a lot when he missed nearly all of 2009 with a wrist injury. If Pisa Tinoisamoa can also avoid the injury bug, the Bears’ have as good a linebacker unit as any team in the League.

Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman are good cornerbacks, but Chicago needs better play from their safeties. They are hoping that their third round draft pick Major Wright will be able to help the safety unit from day one.

Prediction: 3rd NFC North – After bringing on guys like Peppers and Taylor, the Bears will be a better football team then they were last year. The question now is will they put it all together. Jay Cutler did not seem to settle in until late last season, and Chicago can’t afford their new guys to take that long. Chicago should be better in 2010, but it may be asking to much for them to overtake the Viking and the Packers. NFL lines makers currently have listed the Bears’ at +350 to win the NFC North.

2010 UCF College Football Predictions

The UFC Knights ended out the 2009 season with a loss verse the Rutgers in the St Petersburg Bowl, but still were able to finish up the season 8-5 and brought home second place in the Conference USA East with a 6-2 record. The Knights head into the 2010 season looking to bring home the conference title with 15 starters back. Here is a quick breakdown of what UFC will send out on to the field on both offense and defense, plus my thoughts on where they finish up in Conference USA.

Offense:

UFC loses 2009 starting QB Brett Hodges, and is not clear who they are going to have starting the season. Junior Rob Calabrese looks to have the early lead, after throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns on 46 attempts last year, but he must first beat out freshman Jeffrey Godfrey and Stanford transfer LD Crow.

At running back UFC gets back junior Brynn Harvey, who rushed for 1,109 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009. Brynn is the second leading running back in Conference USA, and looks to be one of the top backs in the conference in 2010.

The Knights get their best two threats back in the passing game in junior AJ Guyton and senior Kamar Aiken, plus get back junior starting tight end Adam Nissley back as well. It is going to be interesting to see what kind of stats this unit puts up with a new starting QB, and my early expectation are for this unit to have a bit of a down year.

With four starters returning on the offensive line, it seems as though the Knights should have continued success with the ground game, and will also help in giving whoever wins the starting QB job a little more time to throw the ball. The only change for this unit comes at center, where sophomore Jordan Rae is expected to take over the starting role.

Defense:

The Knights figure to take a big hit in their rush defense this season, as they lose their top two defensive tackles from 2009 in Torrell Troup and Travis Timmons. They do however return each starter at defensive end in seniors David Williams and Bruce Milller, and Miller led the way for the Knights in 2009 with 13 sacks. Entering the fall it looks as though senior Wes Tunuufi Sauavao and junior EJ Dunstun will take over at the two defensive tackle spots, and both will bring a lot of size with an average weight of 304 lbs.

The best unit on defense will come at the three linebacker spots, where UFC returns two of the best players in the conference at the two outside spots in seniors Derrick Hallman and Lawrence Young. The two combined for 15.5 tackles for a loss in 2009 and are the top two leading tacklers back from last year. Look for junior Josh Linam and senior Chance Henderson to battle it out for the starting middle linebacker job.

In the secondary UFC returns one of the best young corners in the conference in sophomore Josh Robinson, but that is just about the only good thing you can say about this group, as they really struggled to prevent the pass in 2009. Fellow sophomore Kemal Ishmael is the only other starter back in the secondary, as he returns at free safety.

UBet Prediciton – 1st East: UFC is strong on both the offensive and defensive lines, and I think that is going to carry them to the conference title in 2010. They are going to need whoever earns the QB job to play well, as they will struggle to move the ball if opposing defenses can just load the box. The amount of experience UFC has coming back, is also a prime reason why I have them marked in the top spot.

Modern Archery Equipment

The ancient skill of archery has been practiced throughout the past and the present in many cultures around the world. The bows used by hunters, warriors and military in the past were not nearly as sophisticated as those available to today’s archer. Now used mainly for recreational purposes, archery is the skill of accurately firing an arrow from a bow to hit a specific target.

The bow was thought to have been used around nine thousand years before present day or 9000 BP. The oldest bows that have been found to date were discovered in Denmark in a swamp. For many years, a bow and arrow was the only way to hit a potentially dangerous target from a distance. As such, many cultures put a lot of effort into developing archery equipment and skills. When firearms made an appearance, archery fell out of favor until recent times.

The construction and purpose of the wide variety of bows available are all very similar. All bows have a flexible limb, to which a string is attached. The string is pulled back, creating mechanical energy, which fires the arrow when released. There are two basic categories of bows – one where the string is pulled back by the archer with his own strength, and one where the archer has mechanical help.

Within each category of bow, there are many specific types of bows. Let’s take a look at some of the bows where the archer pulls the string without assistance. Some of these range from the longbow, which is tall and narrow limbed with a D shaped cross section, the flatbow with wide flat limbs, the cross section being rectangular. There are also ones like the cable backed bow which use cords at the back section with the draw weight being adjusted with a change on the tension on the cable.

Possibly one of the more popular today is the compound variety. This uses elliptical wheels or cams at each end of the limb achieving a situation where less force is then required to hold at full draw allowing more aiming time. With the right adjustments this type of bow only needs approximately twelve pounds of force to pull a sixty pound cord at full draw.

Of course a bow is of no use without arrows. These can be made from a number of different types of materials such as wood, aluminium alloy, fiberglass, carbon fiber and a composite type material. Arrows are made up of four parts, the shaft, the point, the fletching and the nock. The shaft is a long, straight rod, with its length depending on the height of the archer. The point is a sharp tip at the front of the arrow, capable of piercing the target. The fletching is usually three feathers or similar material, helpful in stabilizing the arrow’s flight. The nock, at the back of the arrow has a groove to fit the bow string.

The modern bow string is quite often made of materials like dacron which have a high strength. A traditional type of bow may use linen or some other material.

Archers also wear protective gear. In order to protect the front arm from being snapped by the string, most archers wear and armguard, also called a brace. Fingertabs can prevent injury to the fingers from constantly pulling on this very strong string.

Many people, including children as young as five years old can learn archery. There’s sure to be a place nearby like these Orange County archery classes. Probably more common than hunting is target archery. Archers participate in competitions where they shoot at stationary targets from various distances. Target shooting can be done at an indoor or outdoor archery range. Hunting with bows and arrows is recognized as an international sport.

If you are looking for a place to experience archery first hand you can find archery program San Diego here.
